Trainings for the Capacity Building of PTC Members

The WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) aims to promote and coordinate the planning and implementation of the measures to improve tropical cyclone warning system in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea in order to minimize damage caused by tropical cyclones and associated floods and storm surges in the region. Therefore as part of its programme and activities, the PTC, with support by the WMO and India, has been making arrangements of trainings for human resource development and capacity building of National Meteorological Services (NMSs) of PTC Member countries in areas of Storm Surge Modeling and Operational Tropical Cyclones Forecasting since 2003 and 2005 respectively.

For this purpose, WMO at the request of PTC makes arrangement of the following trainings at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi.

  •         Attachment of Experts for Training on Storm Surge Modeling at IIT, New Delhi

  •         Attachment of Experts for Training on Tropical Cyclones Forecasting at RSMC, New Delhi

Every year, PTC extends invitation to two PTC Member countries through their Permanent Representatives for WMO/ Directors of NMSs for nomination of their meteorologists/experts for the above training on storm surge modeling at IIT, New Delhi. The training is meant for enhancing the skills of the meteorologists in tropical cyclones associated storm surges prediction. The participants are imparted hands on training on the use and running of computer-based IIT storm surge model. During the training, the participants also perform several numerical experiments to understand the model performance and its working. After the training, they become able to implement the latest version of IIT storm surge model at their respective forecasting offices/ NMSs of PTC Member countries.

Similarly, three PTC Member countries are invited each year for nomination of their meteorologists/ experts for training on tropical cyclones forecasting at RSMC, New Delhi. This training is meant for enhancing the skills of the meteorologists in tropical cyclones forecasting and the participants learn about the latest available scientific tools and state-of-the-art techniques employed in tropical cyclones forecasting. After the training, the participants are able to effectively contribute towards improving the tropical cyclones forecasting services of the NMSs in their respective PTC Member countries.

These trainings are solely arranged for the PTC Member countries and Members are invited for participation in these trainings on rotational basis.
