PTC Sessions

The WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) for the Bay of Bengal and Arabian has been holding one session annually since its inception. The first session of the PTC was held in Bangkok, Thailand in 1973.

The annual plenary sessions of PTC are convened by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in cooperation with PTC Secretariat. Generally, the annual sessions are hosted by PTC Member countries on rotational basis or as agreed by PTC. The sessions are attended by the Members and representatives of WMO and ESCAP. Representatives of non-member countries and international organizations (ICAO, UNDP, UNESCO-ICG/IOTWS, US-ISDR, ICHARM and others) also participate at the annual sessions as observers.

Preparations for the annual sessions, including preparation of the session documents are handled by the WMO, ESCAP and PTC Secretariat. Delegates and observers to these sessions are from agencies involved with the meteorological, hydrological and disaster prevention and preparedness (DPP), training and research aspects of the PTC’s programme.

At the beginning of the proceedings of each annual session, the representatives of PTC member countries elect Chairperson and Vice-chairperson of the PTC who hold their posts until the next session. The Chairperson of the drafting committee of the session is also elected by the PTC.

At the annual sessions, the PTC reviews activities and progress made at the national and regional levels during the preceding period (since its last session) in each of the three major components of the PTC programme of activities, namely: meteorology, hydrology and disaster prevention and preparedness (DPP), as well as in the supporting components of training and research as per Coordinated Technical Plan of the PTC. Publications issued under the programmes of the PTC are also reviewed. The PTC also considers establishment of the Annual Operating Plan for the next year and beyond for an efficient system in reducing tropical cyclone related damage. Tropical Cyclone Operational Plan (TCP) and the preceding cyclone season are also reviewed by PTC during annual sessions. The PTC may also consider any other matter of mutual interest during the annual session if so require.
