PTC Members

The Membership of WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) comprises countries affected by tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Currently, PTC is composed of the following nine Members::

1.      Bangladesh

2.      India

3.      Maldives

4.      Myanmar

5.      Oman

6.      Pakistan

7.      Sri Lanka

8.      Thailand

9.      Yemen

The PTC region covers a vast expanse of the North Indian Ocean and contains a large and diverse range of ecosystems, including deserts, forests, rivers, lakes and seas. The desert extends from Oman into Pakistan and northwest India.  Compared to other WMO tropical cyclone regions, this region includes the highest mountains, the rainiest areas and the driest deserts, with their associated variation in culture and biodiversity. Over the long period of human occupation in the region, exploitation of natural resources, urbanization, industrialization and economic development have led to land degradation and environmental pollution. Climate change and climate variations have also their signatures and represent future stress as well.

Tropical cyclone warning services of the Members vary in duties, size and status of advancement, geography and state of development. Therefore, they are highly differentiated in capabilities and vulnerabilities. Tropical cyclone warning services in Member countries are generally provided by their National Meteorological Services (NMSs) and usually Member countries are represented in the sessions of PTC by their respective NMSs. However, as PTC develops and reviews activities under three main components: Meteorology, Hydrology, and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), as well as in areas of training and research. Therefore, Member countries are always encouraged and urged to send representatives of their respective National Hydrological Services and National Disaster Management Authorities/Centers as part of their delegations to attend PTC sessions.

The following are the NMSs of PTC Member countries:
